IWC is working towards its sustainable energy targets. The offices and 7 staff houses are now heated by geothermal and we have completed the installation of 30 Kw solar panels on one of the farm buildings. We have avoided wind turbines because of the risk to the birds, and a hydro scheme on the lake would only generate 2 Kw max so is not economical. The insulation of all houses has been upgraded, including all roofs, windows and doors. Although we have huge wood supplies from the woodland management, we have not gone for biomass boilers because of the ongoing daily handling required. Instead we are able to market surplus timber. We are trying to calculate our annual energy usages across all buildings and transport but this has proven difficult so far. The fluctuating government policies on energy tarrifs have not helped the situation.
