The Saker Falcon

The Saker Falcon breeds from eastern Europe to eastern Mongolia. Overall the species is declining in both range and numbers and is of increasing conservation concern. We continue to do a lot of work on this species.

The Mongolian Artificial Nest Project

The wide open steppes of Mongolia have plenty of prey for falcons, but no places for them to nest. So from 2006- 09, we trialled different designs and densities of artificial nests and in 2010 we put out a total of 5000 artificial nests spaced 1.5 km apart. Our scientists, which include Mongolians, monitor the nests to count eggs and chicks. In 2012, 380 pairs of Sakers produced 1,315 chicks which have all been micro-chipped. Also 905 pairs of Kestrels, 298 pairs of Upland Buzzards and 269 pairs of Ravens used the nests. Between them these predators help reduce the pest rodents that eat and destroy the pastures. The Mongolian government harvests some Sakers each year for Arabian falconry as a recognised sustainable use of a wildlife resource.

تحتوي السهوب المنغولية الشاسعة على وفرة في طرائد الصقور إلا أنها لا تحتوي على أماكن لتعشيشها. قمنا في الأعوام 2006-2009 بتجربة عدة تصاميم وكثافة توزيع للأعشاش الاصطناعية تلاها إقامة 5000 عش صناعي على مسافة 1,5 كلم من بعضها البعض. قام علمائنا ومن ضمنهم علماء من منغوليا، بمراقبة الأعشاش لإحصاء البيض والأفراخ. في عام 2010 انتج 380 زوجا من الصقر الغزال (الحر) 1,315 فرخا زودت جميعا برقائق إلكترونية. استخدمت طيور أخرى الأعشاش منها 905 زوج صقر عوسق و298 من صقور المرتفعات الحوامة و209 زوج غربان. تساهم تلك الطيور اللاحمة في الإقلال من أعداد القوارض الضارة التي تأكل وتدمر المراعي. تحصد حكومة منغوليا أعدادا من صقر الغزال في كل عام لبيعها للصقارين العرب في استخدام مستدام معترف به لموارد الحياة الفطرية.
